Through the Wormhole:Does Time Exist - Revisited

In a universe of possibilities; Time's existence was put the the test in last night's episode of Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman. Join us here on Plus Ultra Tech as we re-examine the highlights, and fill in the gaps.

"When I was a kid, summers were timeless. I had no particular place to be, no appointments to be kept. My days were bounded only by the position of the sun. Time didn't matter so much back then. Now my life is a race against time, but what am I racing against?" -Morgan Freeman

Throught the Wormhole : Does Time Exist gives tribute to the father of time - or at least the father of questioning time; Paraminides. He suggested time was an illusion, and if we could step out of time, we could view it as one stagnant piece.

Julian Barber

Julian Barber has taken Paraminides work even further. Julian states poetically, "The instant is not in time. Time is in the instant." He compares time to a series of instants, like a movie film giving the illusion of time out of still instants.

David Eagleman

Time, does it exist? Certainly the qualia of time perception exists. The perception of time can become radically out of sync and this can be catastrophic to the individual as explained by David Eagleman. So to the human consciousness mind, yes, time does exist. Well, that begs the question; can time exist sans consciousness?

Tim Maudlin

If thats the case, does it matter? We find ourselves at the old "if a tree falls in the forest, does it make a noise" question. This is what I believe Tim Maudlin had alluded in his critique of the time doubters. He pointed out that math is stagnant, while time is not. In a developing and evolving universe, perhaps modern mathematics may actually be a pitfall in understanding time.

Sean Carroll

Sean Carroll equates time with entropy. He explains how our universe goes from order to chaos. He theorizes that perhaps there is an "evil twin" universe which goes in reverse time.

The 2nd law of thermodynamics; entropy, was carefully questioned by Terrance McKenna, who was absent from this entire video. Herein lies the biggest flaw of this episode as he has garnished the respect of many with his radical concepts such as; The Omega Point and his Time Wave Zero software program. Terrance MeKenna died in 1999 and has been missed every day since.

Steve Weinstein

In this episode, Steve Weinstein presents a string theory influenced concept; multi dimensional time. He suggests that our universe may only appear to have a 1 dimensional time line. The biggest problem with this theory is simply our conscious thought process is completely linear, aka 1 dimensional time. Simply conceiving what 2 dimensional time would imply is even harder to conceive than visualizing 4 dimensional space.

Lee Smolin

Time or space, could one have come first? Lee Smolin believes time is a relation to events and it has existed forever. He points to experiments such as the Fermi Space Telescope which may prove time exists, if photons change speed after traveling vast distance into deep space. Lee personally believes time came before the big bang, and will continue forever.

This mindset is most compatible with the linear human mind, as stated in detail in The First Dimension, "We think in a linear fashion, and there is currently no way for us to process thought otherwise."

Does Time Exist - The 30steps Conclusion
In a word; yes.
The word "time", as artist John Volanin pointed out my be antiquated. Perhaps, we need a new word for this perceived series of events. I propose my favorite word; PROGRESS
Through The Wormhole does a great job of contemplating the consciousness aspect of time, but modern quantum physics is telling us consciousness actually makes up the universe. So, the element of consciousness in explaining time should not be understated.

Each of us individually drives the universe through our consciousness. We may be consciousness jumping to various frames of animation, or conscious beings collapsing the world around us into the state we perceive. Either way, this only makes me consider just how limited our sight of the universe really is...

Imagine for a moment you can percieve all those frames of instants, or perceive the universe before the act of observation causes wave function collapse. In my opinion, this is the next evolution of sight. To see the universe fast enough, and then choose your path on a quantum level. We are just beginning to enter this realm of possibility through quantum mechanics. Once we can truly see our options, and collapse wave function to a desired state, then we will have stepped up a notch in our ability of controlling our destiny. Then the next perceivable step would perhaps be going non-linear, multi-dimensional time.
